Spring Break

Some days, there are no words — it’s just all about a feeling.

Well, okay. I have some words. I am a writer after all.

I’m gonna bring some reverse Monday psychology to the table today.

I read this alarming statistic over the weekend (while mindlessly scrolling my Twitter feed, ironically) about how we spend more than half of our lives with wandering minds — focusing on daunting tasks, to-do lists and absent-mindedly living in the moment.

If you think about it, that means we’re only giving our life half of the attention it deserves because — more often than not — we’re dwelling or obsessing or stressing over things other than what we’re actually doing.

Huh.

Some days I wonder whether or not there are medals given out for people who have learned to calmly balance the chaos of everyday life.

… Seriously, are there?

At any rate, that feeling I was talking about earlier: It’s “tired.”

I’ve just about finished the very long, very intensive SoulCycle Instructor training program (update on what’s next is coming soon), so a little R&R is just what the doctor ordered this week.

I forfeited the right to a tried-and-true spring break long ago (RIP, college), so that will come in bite-size bits for me — like actually finishing my gallery wall. Or crawling into bed 20 minutes earlier, going for nightly runs, and having my coffee on the couch (and in my favorite slippers) instead of in a lukewarm to-go cup.

All in all, give yourself a break this week.

Ironically, taking time to do nothing is often what brings everything into perspective.

  1. Loved reading this post and such a good reminder to take a step back and smell the roses once in a while. Sometimes I feel like I’m trying to focus on so many things that I forget to put all my energy and focus into what I’m doing at the moment. Hope you enjoy your spring break!

P.s. The gallery wall looks awesome!

  2. I definitely need to take time to do this more. I’m usually just such a busy person that I don’t take the time to sit very often and just be still. Maybe getting back into yoga will help with that. Thanks for the statistic.

  3. I’ve been struggling a lot with either feeling like I need to be doing something or just totally being lazy & not doing anything beyond watching Scandal. I think a happy medium needs to be found & that my down time should be tackling that list of fun things!

  4. Couldn’t agree more. I’m doing a meditation challenge for the blog (and let me just say, it is a challenge!) and have been sitting in hour long classes at The Path - Monday and Friday mornings. You should join me sometime!

  5. You look so cozy in this post! I’m loving that gallery wall. I absolutely am guilty of spending most of my time with a wandering mind. I’m currently thinking about an upcoming trip to Europe, which makes it seem so far away. I should try living in the moment more! Can’t wait to hear about your Soul Cycle experience :)

  6. I can’t even begin to describe how much I needed this post today, Hallie. I have a very long week ahead of me, and I’m trying my hardest to take time every day to just relax, even if it’s just 15 minutes in the morning to have my coffee before I start my day. We all need a little “me time” to keep ourselves sane. Thanks for the reminder!

  7. I like the idea of giving ourselves little break, especially mental breaks! I constantly find myself distracted and thinking 10 steps ahead.
