Okay, I guess I’m ready to admit it… Summer is long-gone and it’s getting cold in Chicago, which I feared meant that all of my cute, frilly party frocks were destined to be banished to the back of my closet until spring.

Thankfully, the first week of November threw us a bone in the form 50-degrees-and-sunny, to which I took full advantage of in floating chiffon and peep-toe pumps.

Chiffon doesn’t exactly scream November, but there are ways to make your pretty summer pieces more cold-weather appropriate. Take these lessons in layering, for example:

  • Wearing a long-sleeve black top under your spring and summer frocks is a simple way to take them through fall and into winter.
  • Keep from looking bulky (and like you’re homeless wearing everything you own) by sticking to basic add-ons, like a neutral-colored chunky knit.
  • Lastly, the ultimate easy transformation: Opaque black tights and boots have the power to turn any outfit into a cozy autumn (and beyond) ensemble. That’s how I’ll be dressing, now that those pretty leaves no longer linger on their branches!
