Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Even if you haven’t heard of Robert Rodriguez, you’ve likely seen his clothes – whether a custom red suit on Heidi Klum or Red Carpet show-stoppers on the likes of Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson.
This cult favorite fashion designer is known for his sophisticated silhouettes, impeccable tailoring and unparalleled quality, and this season’s collection was no exception. An incredibly amazing mix of vivid neons and neutrals, stained glass window prints and polka dots. Unsurprisingly, I’m obsessed!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to his spring runway show in Chicago today, but I was lucky enough to score a few minutes of his time. Read on as I pick Robert’s brain about the collection, how he wants you to feel in his clothes, and a few of his fashion favorites!
**
corals + cognacs: When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in fashion design? Robert Rodriguez: When I was young, I always wanted to be an architect. But when my mother gave me a book on Christian Dior, I read it over and over. It was this book that made me realize I wanted to be a designer, and led me to study at FIT.
c+c: So, Dior was a huge source of inspiration in your decision to start a career in fashion. Who or what else influences you in your designs? RR: I still find a lot of influences in architecture – the lines, materials, and construction. For Spring the vivid colors, history, and bold architecture of Downtown Los Angeles were a big draw. Photography and Art are also sources of inspiration for me.
c+c: Who are you designing for? What’s the Robert Rodriguez girl like? RR: To me she is modern and edgy, and really I design for all women. I am inspired to create clothes that anyone can feel beautiful and confident in.
c+c: How do you want a woman to feel when she’s wearing Robert Rodriguez? RR: I want a woman to feel sexy and have a confidence when she goes out. She should be expressing her individuality and look amazing doing it!
c+c: Amen! I’m obsessing over textural details and color combinations from this spring’s collection. Which piece is your favorite? RR: First of all, thank you! Spring was important for me because we used a lot of color and some really great fabrics. The sequin pieces are favorites because they’re so special and unique. They give a fantastic pop of color, but with a subtle sophistication.
c+c: What’s your go-to wardrobe staple? RR: I love a great white t-shirt, leather jacket, and the perfect denim.
c+c: Classic. So, what can we expect from you the rest of 2012? RR: We just showed the fall 2012 collection in New York and it includes great leather pieces, a series with beautiful beading, and of course some sexy pencil skirts. And stay tuned for more to come as the year goes on!
c+c: Okay, last question. What’s one piece of advice would you give to someone dreaming about starting a career in fashion? RR: I think it is important to stay true to yourself and your vision.
Special thank you to Robert Rodriguez for taking the time to do a little Q&A with c+c!

Love his designs! I bought his Ashley gown for my wedding dress. It’s different and beautiful, vintage with a modern twist. I can’t wait to wear it!
Any idea who the model in the campaign is?
I don’t, I’m sorry! I tried doing a little research to no avail. If it helps, I believe this is the spring 2012 collection.
