The Carrie Diaries, Episode 1: Get the Look

I have full-blown anxiety over I’m a bit concerned that I can no longer turn on the TV every Monday to obsess something outrageously on-trend on Blake Lively. If you’re after something to fill the Upper East Side style void in your heart (as I am), you may be in luck.

Tonight premieres The Carrie Diaries, a prequel to Sex & the City that showcases 16-year-old “Everygirl” Carrie Bradshaw (Annasophia Robb) coming of age, of style and into New York in the 1980s.

I did a lot of research for today’s post. I’ll be honest: I’m not sure how much I’ll fall in love with The Carrie Diaries (and it’s style) — at least initially.

… However, in Eric Daman we trust.

Costume designer Eric Daman worked alongside Patricia Field on seasons two, three, and four of SATC — in addition to his genius work on Gossip Girl. That said, I’m certain he’ll kick the ’80′s kitschy to the curb and put a more modern spin on the classic era-of-excess aesthetic.

I predict we’ll see a mix of contemporary labels with some of Carrie’s trademark personalized accessories (like that iconic C necklace) throughout the season. Over time, NYC becomes an important part to her character and style, so we’ll see it evolve as each episode airs. Thank God. That jean skirt below? Not okay.

Young Carrie Bradshaw is at an age where she is experimenting, learning and creating her personal style. We can relate to that, right?

My goal for The Carrie Diaries style series is to showcase elements of ’80′s-inspired fashion that you can wear today. In true Carrie Bradshaw fashion, there will be a strong sense of self and some incredibly on-trend style. There will be personalized accessories. There will be print-mixing. And trust, there will be neon.

Without further adieu…

    • Don’t blame you - I’m going into tonight with an open-mind.

I am really hoping Annasophia Robb’s character style evolves quickly over the next few episodes. I think as she immerses herself more in the Manhattan lifestyle, it will… Here’s hoping, because I miss the Upper East Side!

  1. Hmm, I saw something about this somewhere and I am interested (as a girl who owns ALL sex and the city seasons) but I am with you on not being sure if I will love it!

  2. I think it will be a tough sell for all of us who loved SATC. I don’t think anyone can fill the SJP-as-Carrie void. Still, I’ll attempt to check this out with an open mind. Fingers crossed.

  3. Eh… it’s not SATC, no SJP, so I’m not into it. It looks sort of cheesy to me and that they are trying to capitalize on SATC’s fame, but I feel they will fail miserably. I see this show on the canceled list very soon.

  4. So I haven’t watched GG since Season 1 or 2 (I obvi still loved your “get the look” posts!), but I am SO PUMPED for The Carrie Diaries. Both because I love Carrie/SATC and I’ve been told that me and ASR look pretty similar. (Naturally, I’ll be pretending it’s be on screen.) I’ll be having to Hulu the show though since I don’t have a TV. Hopefully it will be up by Tuesday so I don’t have to watch it too late!

Can’t wait for your weekly feature! xo

  5. I totally forgot this was starting already! I wasn’t too excited when I heard this was coming on (she just seems SO young in comparison to original SATC) but there’s definitely a monday night TV void without GG so I’m definitely giving it a chance!

  6. I’m actually really excited for this premier tonight! I always loved SATC & Carrie so the prequel to that show sounds fabulous to me. I’m so pumped to see the 80′s inspired outfits & to follow along with your weekly posts. :)

  7. I’m not sure about this show either. She reminds me more of Isla Fisher’s Character in Confessions of Shopaholic. But Patricia Fields did the costume designer in that movie - so I guess it all comes around full circle.

    I WANT THAT LIPSTICK SWEATSHIRT.
If only it wasnt 300 dollars!
