Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
One of the only downsides to city living is the inevitably bad hair days that accompany the conditions.
You may know this, but I grew up in the Midwest. Though Ohio’s no stranger to rain, I was spoiled growing up with the luxury of fresh air and foregoing the blow dryer.
Ever since I moved to New York — and despite the number of salons per capita — the metropolitan surroundings have wreaked havoc on my hair. This is due to a number of frustrating factors, but mainly — air pollutants and sticky subway commutes. In other words, gone are the days of air-drying.
During periods of warmer weather especially, New York gets grossly humid, which is utter destruction on hair. Case-in-point: the #TBT moment below.
Yikes. At any rate, I was ambitious last week. Like, really ambitious.
I woke up (no snoozing!), showered and took the time to style my hair using TRESemmé’s Keratin Smooth collection. I’ve been test-driving it lately, as it claims to reduce frizz for both sleek-and-straight andwavy hairstyles. Coincidentally, the moment I stepped outside to meet my friend and photog, Lydia, the sky opened up and it started raining — as you can see from the umbrellas in a photo below.
A mere few steps into my mile-long morning commute, I was ready to forfeit my hat hair and indulge my sorrows in a freshly-baked salt bagel, but I decided to weather the storm (ahem) and photograph my ensemble anyway to see if the Keratin Smooth line would do what it’s supposed to.
Turns out, it did.
Despite the drizzle, my hair remained super-shiny, frizz-free (it was windy) and strangely salon-smooth, which I attribute mainly to the Keratin infusing serum. During my AM routine, I ran a quarter-size amount through damp hair and a pinch after heat styling to seal the ends – a surprisingly lightweight finish.
… And thankfully so, because guess who rode by in a blue jacket on his bike and snapped a photo of me during our session?
If you’re unfamiliar, he’s the 83-year-old originator of street style photography who has photographed Manhattan’s elite in the streets (and at galas, events, etc) for five decades. (I repeat: 50 years.) The people of New York revere him in return. It’s incredibly inspiring how religiously devoted to his craft he is, so this was an ultimate celebrity sighting for me.
What happened next was (1) very fast and is (2) a metaphor for my life: Despite my borderline inappropriate obsession, I kept it cool and went with a nonchalant, “Hey, Bill.” Pure magic, you guys.
And then I staggered backwards in shock and stepped in a heaping pile of dog shit.
Brought to you by TRESemmé, a product by Unilever that I use frequently in my day-to-day. Thanks for supporting the sponsors that make my blog possible! For hairstyle tutorials and more on how to fight frizzy locks, check out TRESemmé’s YouTube channel.
The shampoo and conditioner are great, but my favorite product is definitely the serum. If you use it how it’s intended/specified above, it gives you salon-quality results (and that’s me talking, not the brand!) — for a third of the price.
WOWSER! Bill Cunningham!! Lucky girl!!
I’m having a bad hair moment at the moment and it’s great to hear that you ended up solving yours. I am in the process of solving mine too!
I love hats. I am either always carrying an umbrella or wearing a hat in Australia because of the sun in every season. It’s pretty harsh.
Love your leather and lace top too!
YES! It’s one of my favorite films EVER — every year in the days right before Fashion Week, actually, I watch it. I’m so happy that someone (you) brought this up 🙂
If you liked that, you should also watch The Tents. A good, quick watch on a rainy Sunday! x
Your Bill Cunningham moment sounds awesome, minus the heaping pile of dog shit. You definitely played it wayyy cooler than I would have. So, kudos to you! That memory is worth a pair of stinky shoes, right?
you look great love this top and the booties.

You are too funny! Love this top, and definitely checking out that product. Frizz is my arch nemesis! xo
