Practically Preppy

Nothing says summer style like a white maxi dress…

Today’s look is everything I aim to embody in a quintessential warm-weather ensemble: Easy, cozy and fashionable. And, admittedly, practically preppy — coupled with loose waves, a striped tee and a linen fedora.

We touched on this a bit in debating my summer Identity Crisis, but they say that you become like the people you spend the most time with. Style-wise, that’s the impact my girls have had on my closet and I this summer. But I have to say — I don’t hate it. (There’s some additional evidence of this coming over the next couple of weeks.)

Preppy isn’t really fashion taste in my eyes, though — it’s more of a lifestyle. And in channeling East Coast cool-girl vibes all summer, getting dressed has been a rather instinctual process.

My end-of-the-day destination usually dictates what’s being plucked from the overstuffed racks of my closet, and today (yesterday), it was along the East River in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Overall, this maxi dress has been my closest closet companion over the past few months (and it’s by a new-to-me brand called Tart). It’s perfect for a post-brunch beach partying, day-strolling Manhattan’s waterfront, or for traveling to New York’s summertime vacation destination — the Hamptons.

Incidentally, that’s where I spent most of the past weekend. In Sag Harbor (Southampton’ish), specifically. I’m still sorting through photos and stories — which I’ll share more in detail with you tomorrow — but you can head over to my Instagram for a little sneak peek.

  1. “They say you become like the people you spend the most time with.” This is totally true for my style as well. I went to a super preppy high school and still have touches of that style in most of my looks, but going to an anti-prep college and having friends with styles completely unlike my own has definitely expanded my wardrobe horizons. Love the lighting in these photos!

  2. Though I think you look cute, I have to disagree with you on one thing. As a girl who grew up on the North Shore of Long Island, when I say preppy = “fashion taste” and personal “style”…. it totally does. Granted, it’s also a way of life in regard to taste in (hobbies, vacationing homes, sports, even your vehicle). Taste in style refers to the articles of clothing you wear, how they are tailored, the colors and/or color combinations you pick, the designers you stick closely to and so much more. Personally, my taste/style stayed rather extreme preppy up until I graduated from college. That was 10yrs ago. Clearly my taste has (or should have) evolved and now it’s just mildly preppy. Now that I think about it, its only my casual day/weekend attire that is mostly preppy.

Back to you, loving the Panoma hat (I have the same one). Great pics from the new Brooklyn Promenade.

  3. My closet is comprised of many maxis but an all-white number isn’t among them. Now, my wheels are turning with endless styling possibilities…some preppy, some not. Thanks for expanding my fashion horizons, Hallie.

P.S. As a connoisseur of alcohol, today’s post on F Yeah! is right up your alley.
