Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
For better or for worse, one of the best things about blogging is that your website essentially doubles as a digital diary.
Today, we’re recapping the best of the best from corals + cognacs in 2014 — and incidentally, my favorite posts have seemed to be yours, too.
If you’ve been a reader for awhile, today’s post will take you back — in a good way. If not, this will be a great way for us to get better acquainted.
First-and-foremost, though, I just wanted to say a quick thanks. For reading, sharing, commenting — all of those things. From the good to the bad and the oh-so-honest, we’ve been through a lot together in the last year.
I’m really grateful that you guys enable me the opportunity to explore my viewpoint of the world through what I’m wearing (and writing). I’m looking forward to sharing infinitely more stories and style with you in 2015!
Now, without further adieu… From dating to FAQ’s and my love affair with New York City, here are my absolute favorite blog posts from 2014.
“Together, there will be dive bars, late nights and awkward mornings in unfamiliar boroughs. There will be vodka sodas and soul-confirming conversations.”
“A bird sitting on a branch is never afraid of it breaking, because her faith is not in the branch, but in her own wings.” A post I published on my 29th birthday — read, bookmark and share this one.
Tips on how to get organized, stay focused and increase your blog following — plus, what I would have told myself when I started blogging. Read ’em here!
I loved this one — it’s a similar post (to the one above) but instead, it recaps a conference I spoke at over the summer. The discussion went a little something like this.
“If I can’t find a guy who will appreciate the perfect transitional pairing to my faux-leather mini and strappy summer sandals, do I even really want one?” Who’s with me, ladies?
“Rush hour in Manhattan rivals the freakin’ Running of the Bulls, so the redundancy isn’t so bad -zoning out means your chances of having a panic attack decrease by the day.” … This and more on why we call it the city that never sleeps.
Oh, Fashion Week. Every season, it comes out nowhere — and after seven blurry days of street style, cross-town cabs, booze and ankle blisters, it’s gone as quickly as it comes. Here’s my advice for taking Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week by storm — whether you’re a NYFW newbie or veteran.

And last but not least, you’ve gotta love those… Outfit Outtakes.
‘Nough said.
