The Basic Black Jumpsuit

Spring’s answer to effortless style comes in the form of these one-piece wonders…

… And let me tell you, I have been wearing mine every which way as of late.

I love a good jumpsuit — like, L-O-V-E a good jumpsuit — but it hasn’t always been this way. Similarly to the drop-waist dress, this is another article of clothing I just didn’t think would ever work for my body.

While this certainly isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of trend, but the more modern, functional takes on this trend have made me a believer — and with the right fit and style, I think anyone can make a jumpsuit work.

Just like a good maxi dress, a jumpsuit is your one-and-done piece of clothing that can be dressed up or dressed down.

This stand-out style is the perfect balance of chic, clean and classic, which is a hard clothing combo to come by these days.

It strikes the perfect balance on my petite frame thanks to the tailored ankles and drawstring waistline. (Though, guys — if you’re a frequent bathroom user like I am, prepare to fully undress. It’s a small sacrifice to pay, really, but think about that when you’re buying one — a zipper-back may be cute, but it means you’ll have to bring a friend to the bathroom every time you go, and the shit’s gonna get awkward.)

If you’re not sure how to buy one or where to start, look for styles that have a tailored fit at the ankle and a bit of wiggle room throughout. Oh, and steer clear of a harem-style, low-cut crotch — rarely is that flattering.

Naturally, I had to debut mine on the very first (slightly) warm-weather occasion I could find — which, really, is any day where I’m not solely wearing my fitness gear.

Over the weekend, I wore it with canvas flats, a chambray shirt and my go-to pair of Tory Burch sunnies for an afternoon of errands.

Then, I quickly swapped in pair of blush-colored heels and a sleek black clutch to make it more of an evening-worthy affair.

… Though, let me tell you — I felt like I was cheating, because this chic-and-classic stand-out style is so damn comfortable.

All hail the basic black ensemble! You know I’m all about pajamas in public

  1. This looks adorable! I’m pretty short (5’2) and always thought jump suits were more made for tall gals but this looks great, def going to be trying out this trend :)

  2. I have never really been a jumpsuit person but you are making me want to be!!! I love love love this jumpsuit on you, and it’s so versatile!

  3. Jumpsuits are such a perfect piece of wardrobe versatility — working for cocktails in the evening just as well as working for a Saturday spent lounging on the couch. I love how you styled both looks in this post — chic and put together without too much fuss!

  4. I love love love rompers! Sadly I only have one, but it’s in a tropical print so I think that more than makes up for it. 😉 Go big or go home, amirite?

  5. Love how you transformed this look from day to night. Gotta love when things are comfortable! Totally wish I could rock a romper still, but I think those days have passed. I do remember those awkward trips to the bathroom, though. 😉

  6. Love that jumpsuit! I have been wanting a great black jumpsuit for like a year, but have yet to find just the right one.

  7. Okay, the jumpsuit looks rad on you — I am impressed, because the proportions can be SO TOUGH to pull off. That said, not sure how much I agree with your willingness to disrobe in order to go to the bathroom. That’s the main reason why I still haven’t gotten a jumpsuit. Here’s how I did a jumpsuit look without actually doing the onesie thing: http://thestylepragmatist.com/how-i-faked-a-jumpsuit/

  8. You look great!! At first I was skeptical “Jump suit? Versatile?” but you had me convinced by the end of the post, as always :) It’s kind of hard for me to find one that is long enough in the torso since I’m 6′ 2″ but I’m on the lookout!

  9. Came here for the jumpsuit because it’s adorable! But I actually have a question regarding soul cycle. I have an internship in the city this summer and I’ve always wanted to try soul cycle, but I hear it’s pretty hard… Are there beginner classes and if so, do you teach any?!
