Not-so Basic Black

You know this by now, but I’ve accidentally perfected the art of becoming a Serial Snooze Artist.**

When this happens, as it does — or worse, a closet crisis or mounting pile of laundry paralyzes my outfitting abilities — I keep calm and reach for two key pieces (that currently have stakeholder status in the real estate of my wardrobe): A semi-sheer blouse and a comfortable pair of cotton pants.

Tribal-print Knit

In a lingering attempt to settle back into a state of normalcy (does that exist?), my week/ends have entailed a lot of running around here in New York.

On days that entail excessive errands, an all-black outfit foundation has been key. At least, they have been while I’m still living out of my suitcase. Any guesses as to the actual number of trips I’ve made to Victoria’s Secret in the last month? Hashtag TMI.

With what has felt like a never-ending winter, it’s easy to turn to neutrals on a daily basis, which is why I’m thankful for this tribal-print knit. I left my cute winter coat at a hotel in San Francisco a few weeks back, so this oversized, thick knit has been my jacket stand-in. And a cozy one, at that.

…. Incidentally, it works for March Madness/Syracuse games, too. How are your brackets doing this season?

Studded Details

In addition to leather and printed pants, studded details are ruling every aspect of my closet this season.

Last week while shoe shopping, I was impressed with both the collections from INC and Truth or Dare by Madonna, but these caught and held my wandering eye. They’ve got to be the most comfortable pair of pumps I own. I walked (strutted) around all day in these responding on autopilot, saying, “Macy’s. Right? Who knew?” … Or so it seemed.

Like other fashion trends, too much of a good thing can be overkill, so pick one or two items you want to rock your studs on. Pair down the rest of your outfit with neutrals and basics, so that your stud’liness can speak for itself.

Two of my girlfriends, Diana and Joleen, came along to snap these pics. Joleen took the ones above, while D took this one. That’s what’s really going on when we’re shooting detail shots.
