Simple Style

Well, I’m back in Chicago ”stranded” home for the remainder of the week due to a few feet of snow and a couple of cancelled flights. I have a few days away from the office upon my return (whenever that may be), which I’m thankful for — it could be worse! How’s your end-of-holiday season rounding out?

Awhile back, reader Erica submitted an Instagram request asking about the simplier side of my style. That’s exactly what’s in store for my closet for the remainder of my mini-Christmas vacation. I’ll be keeping it simple, streamlined and sweet — jeans, a cozy tee and an easy pair of wedges/cute flats. And, well, probably a jacket.

A quick update: I’ll be doing some site maintenance and general housekeeping around here, so it’ll be pretty quiet the rest of this week. Lots of big, fun, pretty things are in store for corals + cognacs…

Don’t worry; in the meantime, there’s always Twitter and Instagram. Happy New Year, if I don’t “talk” to you before then! Thanks again for reading and for your continuous support. It means the world to me.

Textured

It’s all about texture in this closet as of late… Perforated bag? Check. Fringe skirt? Check. Are there any warm weather trends are you’re gravitating towards this season?

I wore this to last week’s Birchbox event and have since made a pledge to purchase every single fringe skirt I can get my hands on. Seriously — I could not stop walking around like an asshole flamenco dancer the entire night. And then possibly when I returned the privacy of my apartment…

Anyway, I usually take my own outfit photos, but was lucky to have Jessica along to snap some for me. Click over to Bow & Sequins to see what she wore!

Skirting the Issue

A mini-skirt is actually much more versatile than the name implies — you can dress it up, dress it down, wear it weekdays or weekends.

One particularly warm day last week, I stepped out of the shower and stood dumbfounded in front of my closet, struck by that eternal conundrum: I’m getting dressed for work, but immediately thereafter I’m heading to a happy hour.

WTF am I going to wear that’s suitable for work, but can also carry me through dinner and drinks?

My company doesn’t employ a strict dress code, thankfully, but for any office-type setting, a bright blazer and pair of heels in a neutral color are a fail-proof option for spring. With that foundation in place, the remainder of my ensemble seemed to fall in place. I’ve been practicing my color-block since I came out of the womb, and luckily, pastels are very on-trend this season.

If you’re amid a closet crisis (worst!) or are unsure how to transition an outfit to an evening look, just toss some extra things in your bag on your way out the door — a bright pair of heels, a statement necklace, red lipstick. Simple, but they’ll make for a drastic difference.
