City Tourist

When I was apartment hunting in Chicago last spring, my only “prerequisite” was that I wanted to find a home in a ‘hood where I hadn’t lived before…

… Which ruled out River North, Lakeview, and The Loop, among some other locations.

Back in the day, I was that asshole that moved almost every year, thinking she was on the up-and-up apartment-wise, on her way to finding bigger, better, more spacious settings. Then I moved to New York and realized how good I’d had it… Oh, irony.

Although I’ve already called Chicago home for six years of my life (post-college), there are lots of local (and new-to-me) spots I haven’t had a chance to visit.

This is the first full weekend I have in Chicago (without my parents in-tow or the responsibility of moving), so I fully intend on embracing my inner explorer and playing tourist in my own city.
I don’t have a set agenda, per-se, but I plan to post-up at restaurants that specialize in pork belly tacos and at taverns with tasty craft beer on tap.

Since I don’t have any furniture to store them in just yet, my clothes are still in boxes.

Sure, I supposed I could’ve rifled through them to find my favorite jeans and flats, but I opted to hit up the Old Navy near my apartment (dangerous!) instead to pick up a few everyday wardrobe essentials that are ideal for a weekend of wandering.

Over the past few months, I’ve mainly been shopping at Old Navy for activewear, so I was pleasantly surprised when I settled into my fitting room with a handful of trendy, affordable pieces ideal for mixing and matching.

Think Moroccan-inspired separates and shift dresses — all in soft styles and bold prints.

This season’s collection of versatile cuts and eclectic patterns are inspired by worldly destinations, making them ideal or everyday wear (and totally accessible to the wallet) — whether you’re jet-setting or being a tourist in your own city… Wanderlust, anyone?

  1. Love this outfit Hallie! The print mixture is perfect for exploring all the new things that have popped up around Chicago since you last lived here. And those tasseled sandals are adorable, trendy and fun without looking uncomfortable — #shoewin.

Lovely meeting you in person last night! #fangirl

  2. Obsessed with those sandals! I must admit, your weekend plan of tacos and beer sounds pretty legit. Enjoy your first real Chicago weekend (back, that is!).

  3. While I’ve lived in my city for my entire life, I’ve never really looked at it through the eye’s of a tourist. I’m sure there are a bunch of awesome spots staring straight at me that I overlook everyday! When I next get a free weekend, I’ll have to take a stroll around the city and hit up some of the tourist hot spots!

  4. I went and bought these sandals because of you.. and I wear them DAILY!! So comfortable, and they stay on my feet! Old Navy is one of those stores I go into for 1 item and come out with 8-10!

  5. Wow, you look great! I love Old Navy. I guess I need to head back and try on that dress. Oh by the way, if you ever want to get rid of that bag, I’ll take it! 😉
