Happy Friday, guys. How’s your week been?

Peaks & Pits

Pit: Haven’t had a day off of teaching in a few weeks, so my body is feeling really off this week. (Need to be doing more foam rolling and yoga!)

Peak: … That’s a reason to schedule a massage if I’ve ever heard one, no? Another highlight was seeing one of my all-time favorite DJ duos perform this week: Galantis! Have you heard ’em? I re-post a lot of their sets on my Soundcloud profile. Happy listening!

Ask me anything (*New!)

What’s the hardest part of being a SoulCycle instructor? - Kathryn W, via Twitter

That’s a tough question. I’ve talked a lot about how my life has changed since becoming a fitness instructor, but I’d say the most difficult aspect is the amount of physical and emotional energy that goes into teaching individual or group fitness.

Lots of people will say to me “Oh, you’re so lucky to work out for a living,” but that’s the least of what I do in the studio. Class isn’t about me — it’s about the students. I have to make time for my own workouts (and recovery, class prep, music research, etc). It’s not just a career or a time commitment - it’s an entire lifestyle shift. (But I am happy teaching, of course!)

“How did you decide when to have someone else handle your taxes for you? Or do you still do them yourself?” - Jess Z, via blog post comment

I’ve worked with my family’s accountant for the last four years, so it’s just a matter of him and I learning the process together. Personally, I would ask around the blogosphere for recommendations — or at the very least, be able to articulate that blogging is a business and how/why you generate income. I would also triple-check percentages that you can write off — 25% of your clothing/product purchases, for example (I think).

Afraid I’m not much help on this, but would love to hear from you guys if you have similar experience!

  1. Thanks again for letting me know how you handle them! I thought that interview on CC was pretty crazy. Those guys literally needed someone to tell them when to shut down and take a break. I definitely not one of those people who go an entire day and forget to eat. The hanger gets real. Have a great weekend!

  2. I was surprised to see another instructor taking class with me today at spin, but then I realized you probably need to get in a workout, too, since teaching isn’t as much about your journey as it is about the students’. You must spend so much time in gym clothes! 😉
