Music Festival Fashioning

Over the past weekend, music festival season kicked off here in New York City. A few girlfriends and I spent Saturday gallivanting around Queens, which was a rather in-your-face reminder that, well, I’m gettin’ old.

Publicly rocking out the sounds of Calvin Harris - and soon, Vampire Weekend, Pretty Lights and St. Lucia — while soaking up some sun (not enough, apparently — those GAMS!) seems to naturally lend itself to street style best described as either beautifully bohemian or… Slutty Pocahontas. To each her own.

I didn’t attend Coachella this year, but this was an outfit I dreamt up a few weeks back during a bout of wishful thinking. Although I’d probably have opted to trade these insane Rocco pumps for a more modest pair of daytime flats.

A part of me wishes I was still raging in the company of teens and tweens up north, but a larger part is looking forward to the outdoor concerts ahead this summer: GovBall, music in Central Park, the list goes on. In a few week’s time, I’m making my first return to Chicago since the big move to New York for a three-day, non-stop festival extravaganza and reunion of friends. Excited is an understatement!

  1. You (and um, hello–your awesome legs) were in my hood! I actually had NO idea there was music happening in Queens this weekend (mostly because I was chest deep in moving boxes). I really want to see some shows this summer!

  2. I’d pay good money to see you wear those lassies 3 days at lolla or pichfork. Just one day would be outstanding.

I’m more of a t-shirt, shorts and sandals gal for music festivals. I choose comfort over fashion when I’m sweating my butt off in a crowd of screening fans.

    • HAHAHAHA. I literally just laughed OUT loud. I definitely couldn’t do it - I’d be either spiking divots in the ground everywhere I stepped or paying off men to piggy-back me from stage to stage. (Hey, now that’s an idea…)

I’m with you on the t-shirt and sandals. Closed-toed, though; I’ve had one too many sandals ripped and/or toes crushed during dance parties turned accidental mosh pit’ing!

      • I always feel bad for the abandoned flip flop. Or, the poor person who is walking around with a torn sandal who always seems to be some girl who drank too many Bud Light Limes.

  3. Haha I LOVE how you call it slutty Pocahontas! I think you look fantastic, I always wish I had the style & guts to pull of Coachella-worthy outfits, and you certainly do :)

    • Aw thanks, Rose! That construction scene behind me? Let’s just say there was a constant stream of obnoxious whistling happening during this shoot… So unnerving, but I guess that’s to be expected with faux-leather shorts and these kicks. Haha :)
