Beach Bums | Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand

Head’s up, you guys. My Tour de Asia posts from here on out may cause extreme bouts of Wanderlust. Especially for those of us amid the Polar Vortex in the Midwest and on the East Coast. (Frost-bitten right here with you!)

As I’ve mentioned in a recent post, the island of Ko Pha Ngan was our first stop along the tropical coast of Thailand. It was here that we shed our winter wardrobes, oiled up our pasty skin and and spent as many hours as possible partying on the beach.

On a number of occasions, we’d leave our resort (The Coast) and wander into town to shop, eat and people-watch. It was on these walks that I think I learned the most about Thailand — initially, at least. Mainly/to date, that bartering will get you everywhere, wild dogs and cats are the norm, mo-peds and vehicles pay no mind to lanes in the road, and riddalin is sold over-the-counter.

… I’m just sayin’.

The island itself may be small, but it’s jam-packed with tourists (from Europe and Australia) for New Year’s Eve. Remember that Full Moon Party I mentioned? Yeah — we’re getting there. I’ll share stories and photos very soon… I may or may not have jumped a kerosene-soaked jump-rope. YOLO, Mom!

After a few days on Ko Pha Ngan (and some seriously aggravated stomachs due to fruity drink overload), our crew boated to the airport and hopped on a flight to Krabi, another island in southern Thailand. From here — and for the next six days — we’re living on a catamaran!

More to come… In the meantime, you can see more photos of Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan here.
