Canvas Kicks | Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand

The fourth stop during our Tour de Asia was Ko Pha Ngan, an island in the Gulf of Thailand famous for its backpacker-type destinations and rowdy beach parties.

After layering up in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hong Kong, we were more than ready to rid our suitcases of winter wardrobes and hit the beach.

But not before nearly missing our flight, that is.

The airport in Hong Kong is like a freakin’ labryinth. We nearly missed our flight as we didn’t realize getting to the gate required a train and a bus out onto the tarmak. And, uh, we made an essential pre-flight pit-stop at Burger King. Chicken nugs never tasted so good.

Most of our time in Ko Pha Ngan was spent on Haa Rin Beach, where we rung in the New Year with thousands of new friends at the infamous Full Moon Party.

As evidenced, I lived in my J. Crew panama hat and raffia canvas kicks from Soludos during our time on the island — and more often than not, with a frozen fruity cocktail in-hand. (Another travel lesson, here: In addition to those fiber pills, pack TUMS. Lots of TUMS.)

My Soludos are so comfortable that I’m planning to pick them up in a few versions once warmer weather rolls around.

Back to the par-tay. Every month on the full moon, vacationers from across the globe (though hardly any from the USA, we noticed) flock to Ko Pha Ngan for the Full Moon Party‘s all-night festivities, including music on the beach. I have lots of photos to share (as well as tips for safe partying, if you’re planning to go in the future) that I’ll post later this week.

In sum? Three words: Neon body paint.

In the meantime, can we commiserate over this weather? With Fashion Week right around the corner, I’m longer for dryer weather conditions — mainly, so I can wear my fancy new footwear to and from The Tents.

    • You know, it’s funny — they aren’t typically my style either, but there’s something about their island aesthetic that I couldn’t resist. Maybe it’s the raffia? They’re super comfortable, too!
