Cool Sh*t to Share, Vol. 8

Happy Friday, friends! Lots of nutrition- and health-related links to share with you this week. Plus, perhaps my favorite “Peak of the Week” in quite some time! Ah!

Peaks & Pits

Pit: I alluded to how busy I’ve been in yesterday’s post, but that’s what I’ll go with for this week. Being busy isn’t a bad thing, of course, I’m just always so freakin’ tired. Like, exhausted. It’s making it hard to do anything during the day or at night when I’m done teaching, so I’ve been trying to find a bit of a better lifestyle balance. Nothing is permanent, though. That’s good to remember.

Peak: One of my BFF’s asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding next year — oh, AND THE WEDDING DJ! I can’t wait to star taking lessons. If you have any for local spots in Chicago, please let me know!

Here are this week’s links:

  • Five supplements you should be taking for better mental (and physical health). I take magnesium and probiotics regularly, but I’ll have to look into these other options, too.
  • Can you believe September is two weeks away? Although I wouldn’t mind clinging to warm weather for a while longer, I’m excited to bust out a few of my favorite fall staples — like this jean jacket (pictured above/below).

  • An easy guide to lowering your sugar intake in seven days. I’m pretty good about this, for the most part, but need to be better about checking for added sugars on labels of food — like yogurt, for example.

  1. These Friday posts are definitely one of my favorites to read. Love that button up. Not sure if I can make it throughout the weekend without ordering it. Congrats on your friends wedding!!! I mean, being a bridesmaid is so much fun but a DJ, too!? Amazing!

  2. For supplements…Epicor!!!

The short-ish version of the story behind it is this: about 60 or 70 years ago, a company was putting Epicor in the feed mix it was giving its animals. There was a group of people whose job it was to mix it in, and eventually, those people went to their superiors to ask if they could use their sick days as vacation days because they were never getting sick—the company realized these people were breathing in the Epicor and it was boosting their immune systems.

My mom read about it and put my grandpa on it in the last few years of his life, and more recently she made me start taking it. I took some very heavy antibiotics a few years back that f*cked me up for what I assumed would be life. I took various probiotics on their own off and on for three years and had very little improvement. About 3 months ago, I started taking Epicor with my probiotics and the improvement was speedy and amazing. I know I sound like a legit spokesperson for this but if you’d been dealing with what I was, you’d be singing its praises, too! Something about the cultures in it create a more healthy environment for the probiotics to stick, too. You can find it on Amazon 🙂
