Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Earlier this week I talked about treating the city as a playground, and this notion is especially so on Saturday afternoons — the one day each week when I can finally take a few hours to rest, recharge and hit my own reset button.
One of my favorite warm-weather activities in New York is taking a solo trip to the park, where I can lounge in the shade, people-watch and listen to music.
I haven’t been able to spend much time outdoors lately (beyond my daily commute — and even half of that is underground on the subway), so I really relish the time I’m able to.
For today, I ventured to one of my favorite grassy spots in Brooklyn Bridge Park, which arguably boasts one of the best-ever views of Manhattan’s city skyline (it’s also where Jane’s Carousel is located).
The park is a way’s away from my apartment, so I like to combine a bit of a cross-training workout into my lounge time. Two birds, one stone, you know?
Old Navy’s line of activewear is perfect for this, as their pieces are durable enough for exercise but cute enough to function as lounge-worthy, laying out gear — like today’s contrasting cobalt sports bra and perforated shorts combo. Plus, they match my new kicks — which are front-runners (ahem) for the most comfortable sneakers that I own.
(And as a general fashion PSA: If you don’t own a set of ON’s multi-colored socks, I’d highly suggest making the marginal investment.)
I’ve spent a lot of time here stretching, reading, making SoulCycle playlists and writing blog posts — often times prolonging my trip from the early morning into the evening and well after dinner time. Your computer battery lasts a lot longer when you’re not connected to the Internet (which is actually a rather ironic metaphor for life).
On days like this, I’m still able to be productive without absent-mindedly wasting time online. I typically spend a long time here, so you know I can’t go too long without snacks (on snacks on snacks).
I’m the type of person who eats all day long (smaller meals), and you know I can’t go long without snacking. Come to think of it, I’m a self-proclaimed snack connoisseur of sorts.
A new-to-me discovery is NatureBox, a delivery service for better-for-you snack options. Today, I brought Big Island Pineapple and Sea Salt Pop Pops in my bag, but there are lots of really tasty options to choose from.
Have you guys heard of NatureBox? If not, today’s a good day to get familiar, as they’ve teamed up with Old Navy on a really cool summer sweepstakes. If you want to partake, just click here, enter your e-mail and give a sentence or two about your wellness and fitness goals.
Pretty simple, right? Do that and you’re automatically entered to win a full year of NatureBox snacks, $500 towards an Old Navy wardrobe and $4,500 to help meet your fitness goals. (… I’m biased, but think of all the SoulCycle classes you could take!)
We’re halfway through the year, after all… How are we doing on those resolutions?
ENTERED! I just jumped on the spin train (when can we get a SoulCycle in Charleston?!), and I’m obsessed. Totally get the hype now. Thanks for sharing this!!
I need to try out Nature Box, I have heard so many good things!
Came to your soul cycle class this morning at 83rd, it was a blast! I am here in the city for the summer and have always wanted to try your classes, sad that we are not overlapping longer before your move but think I’ll be able to come to one or two more classes this week! Hope the moving preparations are going well, must be so stressful! xo
Totally have to check out Old Navy’s active wear. Thanks for sharing.
