Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Living in the age of social media can often leave you feeling as though you’re not doing enough — in all facets of life. You know?
Whether its work, weekend, blog, fitness, relationships… The list goes on. Or it’s that we have this perception that we’re not doing it fast enough – and I know you can relate to that on work/blog standpoint.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about the effect technology has on me — my mood, perception, sense of self-worth and so on. Crazy, isn’t it?
I’m not going to dive too much into this iceberg of a thought today (as I’m saving it for another post/experiment that I’m working on), but generally speaking: I just wanted to start the conversation.
What do you think? When you strip away the filters, likes, comments and screenshots, I think it comes down to a simple longing for connectivity.
Ironically, though, many of our actual, physical experiences have become virtual and fragmented — and I sincerely believe the first thing we need to do in order to fuel that feeling of connection is to power off the devices. Shut that shit down!
Ahem.
Some days, there’s nothing better than getting dressed and playing tourist in your own city (or in another city like Paris, but Chicago will do for now… Ha).
This weekend presented the perfect opportunity to pause, put down the phone and spend some time offline (save for a few Snapchats, of course).
//
On Friday, Jess and I checked into the Westin River North for a relaxing, rejuvenating weekend in celebration of World Sleep Day on March 18… Talk about a holiday worth celebrating, right?
(Full disclosure: Our stay was comped by the hotel.)
Though it’s been a bit on the chilly side here in the Midwest, the best thing about these lingering 40-degree temps is that it provides an excuse to wear all of your favorite layers at once.
I recently bought a new camera in an effort to up my photography game around the blog (and for when I travel), so it’s been fun learning to use and perfect the manual settings. Anyone else with the Canon EOS Mark III 5D and have tips to share?
Back to the weekend:
“Westin Weekends” are designed by the brand to inspire personal well-being — or more specifically, whatever that means to you. Perhaps it’s a good night’s sleep (on their “Heavenly Beds”), an in-room SuperFoodsRX dining experience or just generally maintaining good health while traveling.
Breakfast in bed is exponentially better when it comes with a freshly made blueberry, almond butter smoothie… At noon on a lazy Sunday. (You can read more about their wellness programs here.)
The Westin offers have extended breakfast hours and late Sunday check-out, too — both of which you know these nightlife-loving gals took full advantage of. Wink.
It takes a special kind of hotel experience to leave a getaway (or in our case, staycation) feeling rested and restored — but in-all, it was the perfect weekend escape.
Now, back to reality… And this breezy morning in Chicago. Come on, spring!
Staycations are good for the soul! I love to power down, but in the world of blogging, it can be so daunting to try to take a little time off when you know there are 10,000 other things you could be doing at that time. It takes scheduling it for me, but I try my best!
Re: social media and being online, I think it depends on the platform you’re using and why you’re using it. Personal pages like Facebook profiles and private snapchats are about connectivity, but I kind of view public social as being about validation—in both a positive and negative way, as I think it depends on how you’re handling it and your awareness level of it!
I have been feeling all of those things related to social media - especially as it relates to not doing enough. It seems that technology is always one step ahead - so I have to do that much more to stay in touch and in tune.
I’m not sure it’s getting any better per say, and I do see the positive side of it. But, I, like you, feel sometimes it’s a bit out of control.
Great writing, and beautiful photos! I loved the post.

I feel like that every damn day, haha. There’s never any downtime no matter what time it is. But sometimes you just have to take the time. Gorgeous photos and those heels are fab!

Such pretty color combination in this post! I love playing tourist in my own city, but Paris is always better 🙂 Wondering what time you were able to get all these awesome Bean pics with no other tourists around! So cool!
