Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
… A phrase that I think completely embodies my approach to summertime in Chicago, especially as of late.
We’ll get to that in a sec.
But first, this ensemble:
When it comes to dressing for any event that’s out of the office, it can be tough to decide between a look that’s traditional and trendy, sweet or sexy — you know?
The shirt’s front is a standard button-down, and while it might not be the most office-appropriate number without a blazer over top, it’s perfect thrown on over a pair of white jeans.
Boom. Outfit is immediately elevated from basic to edgy.
Here’s a few more open-back tops that I love (at more affordable price points):

On another note, I’ve got to level with you guys for a second.
The last three weekends have been great — so much fun. A girl’s trip to Vegas, a quick weekend in New York, and a three-day music festival here in Chicago. We pack it in in the summer time.
On top of that, I don’t think I’ve had a single day off from teaching/exercising in a month. At least!
In sum, I’m le tired. It seems when my certain aspects of life (for me, work and social life) are going really, reallywell, other areas — most notably, my blog — take a hit.
I hate that. But, I mean, you can’t have all four of your stove’s burners on high at the same time. You know?
Summer is usually a period wherein I spend most of time offline. It helps to reignite the creative spark — and more importantly to reconnect with the things that really make you happy.
Do you ever get in these work/life balance boomerangs, too? It’s totally normal.
So, I guess I’m trying to say two things:
One, I’m sorry. I know content has been super light, but that’s not permanent. (In fact, you’ll find out more about this next month, but there are some very big changes coming to c+c. New site design, hint hint!) I’m always posting and chatting on Instagram as well.
And two: If you’re experiencing the same thing, don’t apologize. Just enjoy it (but, like, get your shit done too).
This season (summer and/or wanting to be more of a social butterfly than slave to the digital world) won’t last forever, so live it up.
Taking a step back during the summer is never a bad thing. You totally shouldn’t apologize! I love your blog and will always be checking in – I’m sure everyone else is the same! I’m excited to see the new site design. Until then, enjoy the summer! 🙂
I couldn’t agree with you more! I’ve finally come to the realization that you can’t have it all….all at once. Something in my life is always taking a hit so that I can focus on another area that needs attention. Cheers to the season of living! And I can’t wait to see the new site design 🙂
Totally feel ya girl.. It’s so difficult to fire on all cylinders all the time. Also, ever since the first post I read of yours with these wedges, I’ve been obsessed. They’re so classic.
Loving this top on you, lady! I totally agree that summer can often feel crazy busy - maybe all of the extra hours of daylight makes us feel like we need to be going that much more! Hope to see you sometime soon!
My blog definitely took a hit this year, but it’s been the year I’ve gotten to live the most offline! So despite everything, I’m happy I was able to spend time having fun with my friends. Now I’m finally looking at getting back to my blog!
