Mixed Motifs

Things are about to get graphic, my friends.

… Just kidding. Sorry. We’re already to that point in the week.

Despite the fact that it’s Tuesday, I’m exhausted. And as a result, slap-happy!

This tends to happen mid-way through Fashion Week — as all sense of time during the day starts to fuse together. (Especially since the other 50% of my time is now spent in a dark, candle-lit studio!)

All week, I’ve been remaining true to my mantra of mixing comfort and style. On the bright side, I suppose, this has made our near-arctic temperatures a bit more bearable to dress for. (But let me tell you how much money my cab-to-curb heels and I are spending on cabs.)

The unsightly combination of sleep deprivation and winter’s deep freeze has had serious impact on my ensembles this month. As such, my most-coveted accessory has been a cute coffee mug the size of my head. Why the hell haven’t I hopped on the portable beverage bandwagon before this season? Fashion Week brilliance, you guys.

I’m not saying there’s Bailey’s in my mug, but I’m not saying there isn’t, either.

Anyway, among the styling tricks in my book, mixing prints has always been on my favorite side of the spectrum… Come to think of it, I’m starting to think my blog is becoming a definitive guide to strategic layering and print mixing. That, and living life on four to six hours of sleep.

One of my all-time favorite party tricks is to layer a dress underneath a skirt. (I’m so much fun, aren’t I? Single. I’m so very single.)

Yes, this geographic number is a dress!

And in the realm of today’s look, this works for one important reason: The similar color palettes play well together, so neither of these printed pieces steal this spotlight. The red clutch packs an extra colorful punch to keep the look in-check, too.

I remember buying this ASOS dress on a whim, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that it’s become one of my most versatile pieces.

The shift silhouette works well on it’s own during the summer, but is often used as a base layer (under, say, a chic leather jacket) every other season of the year.

  15. I love the impact of a bold winter coat to brighten up gray days, and this one is spot on. The red clutch and grey wedge booties are the perfect complements too.

  23. You literally always look perfect. I love it. And I love following your style since you’re becoming a fitness instructor (ps come to my studio some time! Would love to have you in a class!). I now live in my yoga leggings… but I miss getting dress up for sure!
