Snow Day

Do you remember the good ‘ol days when we’d go out to the bar without our coats?

Like, it’d be 20 degrees and we’d be freezing our butts off, but that seemed like a better idea than the burden of being responsible for your jacket.

Of course, this is downright ridiculous — but we’ve been there, done that and have the frostbite to prove it, don’t we ladies?

This winter, I’ve promised myself that staying warm takes priority — and something that I’ve learned as a tried-and-true Midwest gal/East Coaster is that this doesn’t always mean sacrificing style.

For me, a happy winter means having warm feet.

I found my perfect pair of Sorel boots over Cyber Monday. It was serendipitous, really — I was propped up on my kitchen counter drinking a cup of coffee and I bought them without hesitation.

I remember feeling a twinge of guilt for online shopping before 9 a.m. (as far as sales go, I was only in the A’s — Anthropologie), but I’d actually just begun my search for the perfect pair of weather-proof boots, so it felt like fate. Normal people talk about shoes and fate, right?

Anyway, every year, I have a really hard time finding snow boots fit for city slicking — typically, they’re too bulky, too heavy or, well, just not cute. Or in the case of the Duck Boot, sold out EVERYWHERE.

I was apprehensive about the ankle height at first, but I’ve been wearing them nonstop and I continue to be pleasantly surprised. They keep my feeling nice and toasty, and I love that I can dress them up a bit by allowing a colored pair of socks to peek out from above.

I mentioned this to you on Friday, but I spent the past weekend with my parents. It was a welcome reprieve, as my dad refuses to drink sub-par red wine. Win!

Mom isn’t the most metropolitan-loving person in the world, and one of her biggest concerns with this week’s snowstorm was: “Where are they going to put the garbage? Or plow the snow?”

… Hm. She’s right!

That’s a valid concern if I’ve ever heard one — and if you’ve been to New York, you know why. Don’t worry, Mom: Everyday is garbage day in New York City. (And apparently, they put the snow in the river.)

But, man… Garbage, street slush or not: This city sure is pretty when it snows.

  1. Haha I used to avoid bringing a coat out like no other! I mean…who wants to pay $5 for coat check? Oh to be young and dumb again (not). That’s obviously no longer the case, coat check all the way!

  2. I was laughing at a group of tank top wearing teenagers this weekend while I was out with my girls! Oh the good old days.

  3. I am obsessed with these boots! Thankfully my area in Kansas hasn’t gotten too many snowstorms right now but I know we will soon so I get to get a pair of those.

  4. I’ve always hated layers because as a kid I hated not being able to bend my arms or twist. Now I really don’t care. More layers equals more warmth and I’d rather not be an icicle than be able to bend at the elbow.

  5. Do you remember those Gap ads with the tanks tops and skinny scarves? Hilarious in hindsight! 😉

ps - LOVE these snow-filled outfit shots, so perfect! Your photog is amazing. And those boots ARE fate… I totally believe it.

  6. (Cute post) and yes I do remember those days. I have to say, it also seemed a lot easier to catch a taxi. I would stand inside, wait for my doorman to grab a taxi & hop in. Pull right up to the bar and then run in. These days, NYC is so crowded, it takes a while. Especially on a Fri/Sat night. Do like my friends and I, we have going out coats. I purchased a down coat from Zara, clearly inexpensive and I only use it on the wknds and at night. If something happens to it, who cares. I rather that coat be damaged over my Burberry down. I think we’ve all grown. Scary.

  7. Bahaha! Oh my gosh my girlfriends and I were the worst about not wearing coats in the dead of winter! I completely forgot about that. Seriously, what were we thinking?!

  8. I was the queen of not wearing a coat in college… until I graduated and realized that in real cities you have to wait in line at the bars. Brrr! Great post, I love the pops of blue and green to brighten up a winter look!

  9. OMG I love that your vest is monogrammed. I must get a monogrammed puffer vest like yesterday! And I love the snow boots… I wish I had a reason to have some (every so often).
