Fundamentally Fall

On days when the “I don’t know what to wear” syndrome bites — despite a wardrobe of things to wear — those fundamental, fall basics will always be a girl’s best friend.

Well, basics — and a statement-making fringe handbag (+ Nordstrom has so many awesome options this season).

After digging up a handful of my favorite outfits from last year, I noticed a pattern in my seasonal style — one where I find a handful of signature pieces that I love and wear them on the reg.

Today’s crop knit sweater from 525 America is no exception. I’ve worn it with everything from maxi dresses and more — and it’s been one of my closet staples for the last year. (Plus, it’s over here on sale this season — in three colors.)

If you can’t wear it a handful of times, though, why buy it?

For me, this season’s tried-and-true trend, it seems, is wide-leg white jeans. (And as an FYI, mine are on sale/25% off with code INTHEFAM25.) I was hesitant about buying them at first, as wide-leg pants can seem particularly challenging to style.

They’ve proven to be very versatile, though — I’ve worn mine with a sleeveless turtleneck, tucked in with a button-down blouse, or in the case of today’s look, with a slightly shrunken, crop sweater with a banded bottom (which allows you to embrace volume on the top and bottom without looking bulky).

If you’re steering clear of white for the season and are looking for a blue-jean, denim-colored pair, here’s my favorite — they’re also on sale/marked down 25% off with code INTHEFAM25.

One of the most frequently asked questions I get when wearing pants like this is regarding what shoes to wear with ’em.

Functional though they are, flare and wide-leg jeans require a bit more attention to footwear detail. As a general rule of thumb, your jeans MUST graze the ground for that long-and-lean look, so flats are typically a no-go.

While you have lots of options, you want to make sure your shoe is hidden or every-so-slightly peeking out from the cuff — so in other words, don’t wear flats or boots. I tend to go for wedges, a nude color or anything with a round-toe style, which will create the effect of a hidden heel.
