Zipped Up

I’ve recently crowned a new black basic as the Most Valuable Piece in my wardrobe, you guys.

… The pencil skirt.

The weather has been surprisingly temperate in New York over last month (in the two weeks’ time that I was actually here, ha), which hasn’t given us much of a reason to layer up just yet.

I’m going through that awkward phase of transitioning my wardrobe from summer to fall (and very soon, to winter), which is how I believe my righteous appeal for this style resurfaced.

To the office and for recent meetings, I reach for a fitted pencil skirt, tuck in a blouse and — for today’s look in particular — add a mint-colored handbag for an element of flair.

On the weekends, I’ve been wearing them (them, yes — plural; essentially stock-piling pencil skirts, here) with chunky sweaters and cute flat boots — an outfit I’ll style here on c+c very soon. The finished ensemble is cozy, unexpected and decidedly chic.

This zippered skirt is my current favorite (a Nordstrom Rack find, now available at 40% off!), but J.Crew has a similar style. And, of course, their No. 2 skirt is a must. I have it in two colors!

Trust, there’s nothing in your closet that’s a more versatile, fashion-forward foundation for the office outfit or for a night out. Do you agree? (Here’s a few of my other favorite styles, but the one I’m wearing is on sale.)

  1. Love this. I used to live in pencil skirts when I first started working! Gotta bring em back into my wardrobe for sure. You look awesome!

    • It’s true-to-size. I’m wearing a 6 (regular) — it’s snug, so if the mid-section is an area you like to conceal, I’d suggest sizing up. I don’t think there’s much of a difference between the petite and normal sizes - one hits slightly below the knee, the other just at. Hope that helps!

What do you think?
