Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
There’s something seriously satisfying about purging your closet. Isn’t there? Out with the old, in with the new…
And as if spring fever wasn’t reason alone, I’ve got another excuse for you to clean out that wardrobe this weekend…
Now through May 18, one of my favorite brands — Calypso St. Barth — gives us even more of a reason to get rid of our now lesser-loved items. Here’s the deal:
Every season, Calypso hosts their annual #CalypsoCares initiative, wherein you can donate like-new items of clothing and get 20% off your full-price purchase in return. (You can still participate if you’re shopping online/from your couch, too — simply make a donation via your shopping cart.)
This spring, season there are two philanthropic partners: She’s the First and Fashion Project.
She’s the First sponsors girls’ education in developing nations, giving them the opportunity to be the first in their families to graduate from secondary school — and Fashion Project is the industry leader in online charitable re-commerce, focusing it’s mission on using “fashion as a force of good.”
Calypso gifted me this blouse, but I did make a donation of some brand-name sweaters to the store. (I’m the girl who can’t refuse a good reason to shop, you know?)
Spring tends to put me in a bit of boho mindset, and anything Calypso is the way to go to achieve that instant free-spirited style.
I was drawn to the sorbet-color of the shirt because of its cool, feminine feel; but I love that the lightweight linen material of the breezy button-up blouse is practically wrinkle-fee, too. The less work in the wardrobe maintenance department, the better!
Back to #CapysoCares — I did some research, and here’s what happens to your clothes when you donate them: The like-new items you drop off at Calypso St. Barth are then re-sold on FashionProject.com, where more than half of the net proceeds from those sales are donated to She’s the First, benefiting education in developing nations for young girls.
Pretty cool, right?
So now through Monday, May 18, I’d encourage you to set aside some time to head to Calypso (or shop the the site) and make your donation/give $5 to receive 20% off your full-price purchase.
No better excuse to get your shop on than cleansing that closet for a good cause. Plus, let’s be honest — we’re all overdue for a little purging.
I really appreciate the Calypso Cares initiative to help girls around the world obtain an education. What an important and powerful undertaking! (I also love the heels you’re wearing in this post.)
Seems like a great cause! I’m never the greatest at cleaning out my own wardrobe-I either want to get rid of everything, or keep it all; there’s no in-between for me. Thanks for sharing this great cause!
Love the white jeans! So chic!
