Hi, nice to meet you.
I'm Hallie, a Midwest native, New York City transplant and the mind behind corals + cognacs. If you're looking for an online destination for stylish inspiration and musings on Manhattan living, you've come to the right place.
Here's a bit more about me (and if you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).
I hope you enjoy reading corals + cognacs as much as I enjoy writing it.
FAQ //LOCATION: New York, New York •BY WAY OF: The Midwest (Cleveland/Chicago) •HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Attainable, trendy and fun. I’m constantly wearing unexpected pairings – like statement pumps and a graphic tee. •FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET? The vintage Gucci clutch I thrifted for $40. •ANY OBSESSIONS? I like my coffee black, my heels high and my martinis dirty. •GUILTY PLEASURES? Complex carbohydrates and shoe shopping -- both in excess. (And SoulCycle, as a result.)
ARE YOU A FULL-TIME BLOGGER? No, I work as a Development Manager and Contributing Editor at Glam.com. •WHY DID YOU START YOUR BLOG? I've spent nearly seven years on the corporate grind, where sartorial humor and an expertly crafted color-block can get lost in the boardroom. As a result, I decided to create a blog -- a space where I’d hoped my writing, styling and excessive shoe collection would be better comprehended. •WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Living stylish and spontaneously in New York City – and beyond. I aim to inspire others to have fun with fashion and to live lightheartedly •HOW’D YOU THINK OF THE NAME? To be honest, the name just came to me. I’m a big color-blocker and a sucker for alliteration in writing. It just fit. •WHAT’S THE CORRECT WAY TO WRITE IT? corals + cognacs.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT? corals and cone-yaks. •WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? A Canon T3i with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. •DON’T YOU FEEL WEIRD TAKING PHOTOS OF YOURSELF? Absolutely. Everyone looks at me like I’m insane – especially when it’s cold. Wouldn’t you? •DO YOU WORK WITH ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS? Yep! Shoot me an e-mail and let’s talk. •HOW ELSE CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH? On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
But before we begin, I’d like confess: I’m not sure if it’s the swingy silhouette or the pretty floral print, but I often find myself wanting to steal little twirls in it when I’m walking.
Can you imagine how obnoxiously Carrie Bradshaw that would be? Prancing down Fifth Avenue during rush hour? In my head, it’s cute; in reality, I’d I look St. Patty’s Day drunk.
Anyway, the skirt: I won’t talk about it too much because it’s sold out and I don’t want to break your heart, so instead, let’s focus on what’s ahead — and is currently shoppable.
The latest collection is just as good (this skirt especially)!
Trina Turk is one of my favorite brands, and with good reason.
Trina herself is a joyful presence (I was lucky enough to attend a Fashion Week dinner in her honor last year), and her collections are just as such.
Though our weather has been bipolar at best here in New York, you can bet I’m the type of gal that lives for 72-degree days, bright colors and cheerful prints — which is what it feels like inside the store at all times.
I popped into the brand’s downtown boutique last week to see for myself, and you guys, let me just say: I have never exercised more self-restraint. Or rather, been happier that my bank slaps me with a credit card limit. (Kinda like babysitting for adults, no?)
The new collection celebrates the return of color into our post-winter wardrobes — and it certainly runs gamut on the color spectrum. Think subtle blush tones and shades of gray balanced with bright pops of pink and blue hues. Hooray, spring!
My favorite thing about Trina’s pieces is her wear-now approach — and the fact that she never sacrifices style for comfort.
Her dresses fit like a glove, (this shift silhouette looks flattering on everyone, I just bought it), and there’s a handful of cute rompers, some sportier vibes and, of course, plenty of prints worthy of a tropical paradise in this season’s collection.
As a side-note: Brides-to-be, this is a really cute option for a spring/summer shower or rehearsal dress. Not that I’d know personally; I’m just forever the token bridesmaid. [In song:] All my single ladies!
But for the sake of narrowing (first rent, then shoes): Remember those pink and red strappy Zara sandals circa 2013? The ones that got away? Here’s an identical pink-and-red pair, but cuter — in my opinion.
Okay, enough gushing. And no, they didn’t pay me to write this. Just a girl and her retail addiction…
But don’t take my word for it, you can see it here/browse my favorite pieces below (and if your budget is on the lower side of the spectrum, here’s a darling option for ~$100):
I’m hosting Trina Turk’s annual Spring Style Out event tomorrow night, which is basically an event with cocktails, food and friends. Oh, and shopping discounts!
I’ll be talking through some of my styling tips for spring (and the collection specifically), too. The details are below (be sure to RSVP if you can make it); I’d love to see you in-person.
And if you need convincing, there will be champagne…
I just got a Trina Turk ring in my Rocksbox and I haven’t taken it off since. It’s a triple stack little number with mixed metals. How I just discovered this goodness is beyond me!! I can’t wait to dig around and see what else she’s got up her sleeve. Hooray for spring
I picked up a Trina Turk floral skirt during a Piperlime sale and probably wear it to work bi-weekly! This was my first item of hers but my eyes are opened and ready to shop her spring/ summer collection more!!
This is an amazing style post! I want to purchase every part of this stunning ensemble-the blouse, the skirt, the bag, and the heels! Although it’s not very sunny right now, today would be the perfect day to debut this look. Happy Wednesday
That skirt is a stunner and you look gorgeous in it! And I say twirl all you want! If you’re having fun that’s all that matters. xx
